When I phoned my optometrist with my question, he labeled my floaters as Vitreous Degeneration and not to worry unless my vision is affected. The floaters have been present for over a week- they occurred suddenly with a series of light specks in my right peripheral vision. The flashing only lasted a few minutes with faint aching in my eye, but the floaters persist. Do I need to see an Opthalmologist ASAP or just wait as my optometrist said? If it never gets any worse- do I have to live with floaters in my field of vision forever? I am 60yo female.
I reviewed your history. It seems from the history that you are having sudden onset of floaters with flashes of light. The most common cause for this is vitreous degeneration or vitreous detachment. Since you are having flashes of light also we need to rule out retinal conditions like retinal tear, retinal thinning. These conditions if present require treatment prophylactically laser yo prevent complications like retinal detachment
Hence I advice you to consult your ophthalmologist for examination and treatment accordingly. Hope this is helpful to you.
