Suggest Treatment For Fever And Cold

Hi - I returned from vacation this past Monday. today is Friday. When I returned home from the airport (I was in Hawaii), I noticed I had a fever - it was 102 degrees. I took tylenol and went to bed. The next day I still had a fever and took tylenol and went into work. I then noticed that I felt discomfort in my rectal area (back end of my anus). After not feeling or getting better or worse (other than the discomfort becoming hepmorroidal, I went to a medical clinic on Thursday. He diagnosed me with hemoroids and was suprised that it had not bothered me prior. I explained that I had only this week felt any discomfort whatsoever and that prior I had no pain (or fever). He attributed the fever to be from a cold and the other issue was separate. I am one day into my medicine which is a supository (anti-cortisone) and he also gave me stool softeners to assit with movement and not to inflame the area further. Also a restricted diet of lots of fiber, no spice/fried items. After expoloring and much worry and pain (cannot sit up nor lay down wihtout discomfort), i am concerned for having some type of herniated area near my anus (back portion around the anus area). 20 years ago I had a hernia in my groin area and had an operation and this is leading to me fear as well I guess. Do you think it could just be a severe case of the hemorrhoids? I have not history of have this before and am not sxually active in that area physically - at all. Please let me know any thoughts. Its the weekend and I am afraid of it getting worse (and more painful). Thanks

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* The fever and cold is viral infection of respiratory tract related matter and best managed with

- tincutre benzoin inhalation or simple oiled water vapor inhalation
- decongestant available off the counter with diphenhydramine content or cetrizine
- occasionally one may require to add on an antibiotic if there is associated bacterial infection suspected

* So far as hemorrhoids are concerned, following would help a lot

- sitz bath ( sitting in a tub filled with lukewarm water) for 10 minutes each 2 times a day and additionally after passage of stool

- continue stool softner and steroid cream of local application
- avoid prolonged sitting on hard surfaces and spices in diet

* Remaining in regular follow up with your doc will decide future course of action for hemorrhoids as some cases do require band ligation, laser therapy or surgical intervention.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
