Suggest Treatment For Excessive Saliva Formation

I am 23 years old young man who has been living with the problem of excessive salivation from i have known myself.It is so bad that i am embrassed to do sleep overs and to sleep in public because if i do, i would be droopling all over. The increase of saliva in mouth has been posing a challenge while reading articles and newspapers aloud because some times it sounds as if i am not pronouncing the words properly. Even when i am talking to others, saliva may be thrown from my mouth without me being aware. At times i get rather frustrated to be walking around with towel or rag to spit in.Whenever i go to bed at nights, i have to cover the pillow with a towel to prevent me from messing it up with saliva. My body changes the amount of saliva it produces,according to the season. In winter, it produces more than it does in other seasons. I was told by my parents that it is an inheritance; Nevertheless, I have been trying sinusitis pills and others ,and nothing seems to work after a few months everything goes back to the way it was.I am worried if i would be able to find a partner who is able to stand this deficiency.

I am asking for some suggestions as quick as possible.

Hello and Welcome to Health Care Magic,
I have read your query and i can understand your concern.

Excessive Salivation (Sialorrhea) can have many causes;
• Genetic
• Tooth (Sharp or malpositioned)
• Infection
• Hyperstimulation of Glands by excessive nerve stimulation aka Sensory Dysfunction
• Systemic Diseases

In your case it seems more likely a genetic problem, however i would like you to visit the dentist for examination in order to rule out any other cause. Though drooling during sleep is a normal thing but it becomes worse with HyperSalivation condition.

You dont need to worry, Sialorrhea sometimes can be managed with slight change in habits. I would like to suggest you to decrease or stop using chewing gums, Brushing can also make your mouth dry and use alcohol based mouth wash for oral rinses.

If you were my patient, i would have prescribed Glycopyrrolate (if you are not allergic to atropine).

Other advanced treatment modulities include Surgical removal of Partial or Total Gland or even Radio Therapy.

Thanks and Regards,

Dr Himayun Mir
