Hello, my uncle has been suffering from epilepsy and nervous disorder for quite some time now. He has problems doing regular chores like eating, picking up things, walking etc. His hands and legs tremble. He had epilepsy when he was a child and later it reappered when he was 56 years. He's 60 now. Please suggest good treatment/ doctor for him.

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would like to know his current treatment. Tremor can be an adverse effect related to different antiepileptic drugs.

From the other hand, dementia could also be the cause of all this clinical scenario.

I recommend consulting with a neurologist for a careful physical exam and performing some tests:

- cognitive tests for dementia
- lab blood tests (complete blood count, thyroid hormone levels, fasting glucose, kidney and liver function tests, blood electrolytes)
- a brain MRI.
- an EEG

Only based on the above tests results, you should discuss the best treatment options.

Usually antiepilepsy drugs well tolerated in elderly patients are lamotrigine or gabapentine. But the treatment should be based on his test results.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Aida
