Suggest Treatment For Elevated AST And ALT Levels

I am 45 years old and have drank for the last 25 years. Last February my AST levels were 50 and my ALT was 40. My blood work from last week shows my AST at 95 and my ALT at 129. I am going to quit drinking but how serious are these numbers? I am a single mom with a 9 year old and don t want to die. My Bilirubin was .7. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

AST and ALT levels are definitely higher when compared with the previous values. This indicates that there is progressive damage to the liver cells, caused due to alcohol toxicity.

Right now the values seem to be acceptable since the bilirubin level is normal. However, if you continue intake of alcohol, you would land up in complications associated with liver such as alcoholic cirrhosis.

Kindly quit alcohol, which would help to bring back liver cells functioning to normal. Also, take antioxidant medications such as Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Selenium and CoQ10, which would help to keep your liver tissue healthy.

Kindly do a regular follow-up by undertaking liver function tests and an ultrasound scan of the abdomen every 6 months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
