Suggest Treatment For Edema On Feet And A Large Blister On One Foot

My mother has heavy edema on her feet. Recently she has developed what looks like a very large blister on the top of her foot (about 2.5 X 2 ). What is the best wat to treat this? She is already on 20 mg of Lasix with K supplementation. I am an RN and have considered attempting to drain this asepticly with a size 24 g angio cath.

Hello. Thank you for writing to us

The most likely reason for this blister is her pedal edema and these type of blisters are known as edema blisters.
The blister can be drained by puncturing it with a sterile needle and allowing the fluid to drain.
Avoid peeling off the roof of blister which would act as a sterile dressing.
After draining the fluid, you may apply an OTC topical antibacterial e.g 2% mupirocin ointment, twice daily at the blister site.
Treating the underlying cause of her pedal edema would be effective in preventing these kind of blisters in future.

Regards
