Suggest Treatment For Diverticulitis

I am scheduled for a colonoscopy this Thursday. I have had several bouts of diverticulitis in the past 9 years or so. I am also going to have surgery after the surgeon does the colonoscopy and determines the extent of my problem. Last night I felt very uncomfortable and constapated but am feeling somewhat better now. If I feel worse & end up getting medication Cipro & Flagyl will that interfere with my colonoscopy? I ve waited so long and don t want anything to interfere with the colonoscopy. I know not to take any aspirin (blood thinners). Thank You.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.

Since you are having diverticulitis for the last 9 years with recurrent attacks of infection, surgery may be the best solution as it removes that part of colon that is diseased and hence you can have better life.
Yes colonoscopy is usually needed but if there is constipation and inflammation colonoscopy is best deferred as there is a chance of perforation unnecessarily complication the matter.
Even a Contrast enhanced CT scan can show the best possible extent of disease and the Surgeon can also decide on-table the extent of excision.
Hence request your Surgeon to go ahead with colonoscopy in favorable
condition, be under the antibiotic and metronidazole.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
