Suggest Treatment For Dilation Of The Abdominal Aortic Root

I have been just diagnosed with a 5.2cm dilation of the abdominal aortic root. It was 4cm in 2010. There are no symptoms or other issues. I know it s edging on surgery level but would this level possibly constitute immediate surgery or ongoing monitoring. If the latter would it be safe to travel overseas? I am 64 in very good health.

Thanks for consulting me at HCM. I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I want to assure, I will take care all of your medical concerns according to latest medical practice guidelines.

Usually at this much dilatation I recommend surgery and not the conservative long term monitoring. If you don't have any comorbidity or disease that contraindicates surgery, I suggest you to go for surgery before you travel abroad. As such travel has not much effect on the lesion but there are high chances for rupture of the aorta and also the thrombo-embolic events the may cause a thrombus/embolus formation that may lodge in the Renal Artery and will lead to significant and irreversible damage to one or both the kidneys.
Such kind of emboli may also lodge into heart vessels and lungs that are life threatening emergencies.
