Hello,
you haven't mentioned what insulin you are using. I suppose it must be NPH. To assess your condition I'll need both self-measurements (fasting glucose and 2 hours after meals) and your glycosylated
hemoglobin (HbA1c). If your HbA1c is too high tablets won't make it drop below the target level of 7%. If you're taking NPH careful increasing the night dose will compensate for high fasting early morning glucose.
Insulin is the most efficient treatment for diabetes provided that the patient complies with a healthy diet. Without a healthy
diet plan you won't be able to get better glucose measurement results. Exercise (walking is enough) is also essential.
Your leg swelling could be attributed to several possible causes. Damaged veins,
heart failure, kidney problems etc. Since I've no more information from your medical history, I couldn't possibly say for sure what you should do. You'll need to visit your doctor for that. If you have results from
ultrasound (triplex for the heart and veins), chemistry panel (including albumin),
urinalysis or anything relevant please let me know. I'll be able to give you a more complete answer then.
