Suggest Treatment For Anxiety And Depression While On Several Medicines For Rheumatoid Arthritis

I am 52 and have severe rheumatoid arthritis and take methotrexate, folic acid, and orencia inj. I also take tizanidine and naproxen as needed. A few months ago, I tapered off of venlafaxine 75 Er because I was concerned about taking so many meds. I realize now that I should be on something for depression and anxiety. My 78 year old dad lives with me and I have a 13 year old at home. I also have 2 kids in college that I m trying my best to help financially, but I just can t do enough. I am so depressed about my life, I am a single mom and the support for my family, I can remember the last time I was happy. What is your opinion for the best depression/anxiety med that may also help me lose some weight - I have gained 20 lbs in the last year because I have been eating junk food (milk shakes and chocolate )to try to cheer myself. This all sounds so pathetic when I am supposed to be the strong one. Please advise on a med that you think may help

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As you had shown improvement on Venlafaxine it should be continued. Venlafaxine is a good drug for both depression and anxiety. It can be given up to dosage of 225 mg. Its advisable not to taper or stop medication as there is a high risk of symptoms to revert back. Depression can cause weight gain . Moreover Venlafaxine is not associated with weight gain, rather it often reduces weight. Exercise and a healthy diet plan along with medication will help you in weight control.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
