dehydration due to diarrhea. He is fussy and irritable and has poor oral intake both when his mother attempts to breast feed him and when you attempt to feed with a bottle. When the infant opens his mouth, you notice multiple white spots in his mouth, and the mucosa appears to be red and tender. what is this disorder
Hi Thanks for posting on HCM The treatment of diarrhea requires the treatment of underlying cause and correcton of fluid and electrolyte balances that go with diarrhea.Possible causes may include: bacterial, viral or parasitic digestive infections or other sytemic infections.I will suggest you see the Pediatrician for examination and tests.Tests that may help identify cause and evaluate effects of diarrhea on child may include: full blood count, ESR, stool exam/culture, malaria test, serum electrolytes. From your description, the child may be severely dehydrated and may require IV fluid/ions replacement.I will suggest you see the Doctor immediately for evaluation.The child may require: -IV fluid replacement with ringer lactate -Oral rehydration salt and zinc tablets -Anti-emetics if vomiting -Anti-pyretic if fever Further treatment will depend on laboratory findings.
