Suggest Treatment For Dark Bruising Below The Knee
Hi Dr. Rynne, I was kicked by a horse on the side of my calf below my knee and have a really dark colored bruise. I have used ice packs and have kept my leg elevated. Would Aleve work for the pain? I don t think it s broke because I can walk on it fine and can wiggle my toes. I love horses and I am trying to hide it from family so they don t know. I am over 50 and have been around horses all of my life and this is the first time I have ever been kicked. It was a friend of mine s horse and I think a lot of her. Thanks, Kitty in Kentucky
Hello Sounds like you have a big hematoma ( bleeding under the skin) where you were kicked by the horse. I would avoid aleve and all NSAIDS( Motrin, ibuprofen, Advil, aleve) as these could actually increase the bleeding. Acetaminophen is safe to take, and can help with the pain. Applying ice is the correct thing to do, you can also acquire arnica cream which will help the hematoma go away quicker. The area will likely turn dark purple, blue then yellow as it starts healing. Depends on the size of the hematoma, the body will absorb the blood in 7 to 21 days. I hope you feel better soon
