Suggest Treatment For Cough And Breathing Issues

I have been having major breathing problems every time I visit my family in South Carolina. I get so congested that I cannot breath. I ve gotten thick bloody hard mucus caught in my throat closing my windpipe and it takes me from 10 to 30 minutes to cough it up! I also have congestion that I cannot cough up. My throat closes on me when I breathe periodically. It opens up again, but it scares me. I have tightness in my chest, but I feel like most of my problems are in my nasel area. I take breathing treatments, but the result doesn t last long. Should I go see an ENT? I am desperate for a cure. There is nothing worse than feeling like you can t breathe.

Hello,

I am wondering what you mean by taking breathing treatments - do you have asthma and use an inhaled bronchodilator? An inhaled corticosteroid?

Given that your symptoms are based on a geographic location, the person to see would be an allergist. It sounds as though you are reacting either with an allergic exacerbation, or irritant rhinitis - from something you are breathing specifically there.

You can consider taking a decongestant (pseudoephedrine) and guaifenesin (the strongest decongestant is pseudoephedrine and requires you to ask the pharmacist for it as it won't be out on the shelf). There are products that contain both.

Drink extra water when taking guaifenesin so that it can work better. Also, try a nasal steroid such as Flonase or Nasacort, as addressing what is happening in your sinuses will help decrease what is going down your throat.

I would start with these things, and if still not better, add the antihistamine cetirizine (Zyrtec).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
