Suggest Treatment For Constipation Caused After Taking Naproxen

Hi Doc, I was prescribed Naproxen for lower back pain, but after two days I have constipation. I have regular bowel movement, about twice a day and the amount is enough that it does not float. For about a four days now, the amount is small and I have to strain to get it out. What s your advice?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted your history of taking Naproxen for lower back ache but after 2 days you developed constipation. Otherwise you had regular bowel movements. For the last 4 days the amount of the stool is less, have to strain to get it out.
This indicates that you have developed gastrointestinal disturbance due to Naproxen.
I would advise you the following:
First of all to stop Naproxen so that its effect for GI will wear off and you can start on another anti-inflammatory medicine like Ibuprofen or so.
Take banana and yogurt/curds and see the effects, if no effect you can certainly take a mild laxative.
Avoid the food and the beverages that you know cause you constipation in the past.
Sitz bath in a tub of warm water for soothing effects.
I hope this must help you as it helps all others.
Do not take Naproxen in the future.
Consult an Orthopedic Surgeon for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations for proper diagnosis and treatment.
