Suggest Treatment For Constipation And Blood In Stool

My father has an appointment in a few days with his doctor regarding problems he has been having for some time now. He is severely constipated, fatigued, has blood in his stool, etc. -- basically all the symptoms for colon cancer. His concern (and mine) is that we feel that he may have a blockage in his colon somewhere and we're worried that any medications they give him for a colonoscopy prep will make matters worse. If he does have some type of obstruction in his bowel, can (and should) a colonoscopy even be performed? Is there any other way to check for colon cancer? Thank you for any advice/suggestions.

Yes there are other ways, but colonoscopy is the most reliable option to accurately rule out tumors and other colon pathology. So he can do occult stool test to see if blood is present in stool. Irigography is possible test which is based on contrast and xrays and it may show some bigger tumors.

However, causes ofcauses of abdominal pain and bleeding through rectum are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered.

Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases. If hes has never done colonoscpy and is aged +55 then colonoscopy is definitely recommended and sooner or later sould be done.
