Suggest Treatment For Chronic Plaque Psoriasis

My boyfriend has chronic plaque psoriasis. Scalp, elbows, knees and around mid section of torso. I have also noticed that the skin around is genetials gets flaky and irittated.Occasionally after being intimate with him I will get an infection. The symptoms seem bacterial (thick, white, unpleasant smelling discharge). I have had candida once when I was a teenager - it is not itchy, etc.Reading online info (I know, not advised, better to see a Dr) I have found that men with psoriasis can often have problems similar to his. Additionally, their partners having problems with Balanitis.I realise an appointment with a GP is necessary but can you please provide some information so I can try to manage our expectations and not another disheartening consultation for him.

Hi,

I have reviewed your question. Psoriasis often involves the genital area. The breakdown of the skin can also lead to infections with bacteria or fungi (like candida). I recommend that you follow through with your own suggestion to see your GP (both of you should have a sexually transmitted disease ruled out).

If there is an infection, it might have to be treated with antibiotics. The treatment for plaque-type psoriasis consists in regular moisturizing, with an ointment. 5% salicylic acid ointment works well. Depending on the amount of plaques, a topical corticosteroid ointment might work or one of the newer biologicals. For the scalp a combination of tar shampoo (For example, Neutrogena) and corticosteroid tincture works well.

I hope this answers your questions. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Christine Sauer
