Suggest Treatment For Chronic Diarrhea And Rectal Bleeding

hi, my 82 year old mother-in-law has had chronic diarrhea and rectal bleeding for several months. she took some type of anti inflammatory med such as prednisone, and was left with swollen legs that were very red and had a burning sensation. She reports that the diarrhea and bleeding have resolved, but the leg swelling and redness is still there, even though she stopped the prednisone weeks ago. she is extremely fatigued and has said that she has a mass in her stomach that the doctors say is benign. she has lost weight and has no appetite. She is not forth coming with information so this is all I can tell you at this time. We would like for her to see someone else, but really don t know where to start. Any insight you could provide would be helpful. Thanks, Paula

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. . I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.
In most cases, causes of abdominal pain and bleeding through rectum are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet and sitzbaths. It is very important to take lot of fluids, probiotics, high fibre food and stool softeners to avoid hard stool and straining. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss. Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help and consult proctologist if necessary
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
