Suggest Treatment For Chronic Constipation In An Elderly Man

My father constantly has problems with defecating. I believe that he is severely constipated. He takes prune juice to try to be regular. He s currently 84, and he says he s been having this problem for 5 or 6 years. He tells me he has done x-rays and said that the reading is normal, but yet I hear him constantly complaining about this. I don t know what his doctor is advising him, but he is really struggling with this everyday, as well with arthritis.

Dear- thanks for using our service and I understand your frustration trying to help your father. It is important that he has a high fiber diet, including all bran cereal, vegetables and fruits. He should have a screening colonoscopy for colon cancer, just to make sure that he is not suffering from a stricture or colon obstruction giving him this severe constipation. You should tell him to drink plenty of water, 32 onz daily ,which will help to improve the intestinal fluid.
He should be seen by gastroenterologist .
I hope that my advise has been helpful
