Suggest Treatment For Chronic Body Pain While On Hydrocodone And Sotalol

What problems do you see in an 80 yo with chronic pain (PMR, spinal stenosis post op) taking 4 hydrocodone 10mgm a day. Reliable and always fills the 120 tabs every 30 days. He has no side effects on that dose. Only other medication is sotalol 120 mg tid.

Hi,

What nobody seems to have noticed is that problems with medicines follow certain patterns with adverse events becoming increasingly less likely the further out from the start of them.

So, if someone were started on 4 x 10 mg today, that is a high starting dose and would be quite likely ti increase falls, to produce problems getting off of them, constipation, etc. IF someone has been on it for 5 years or more without any change or problem it gets rather random to say there are problems this year.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman, Addiction Medicine Specialist
