Hello,

Various disorders may impair the normal swallowing process. Extrapyramidal syndromes are a common cause among the elderly.
Frailty may be another potential cause. Having an acute condition may also impair it (an infection for example).

Your father should be examined by either his primary care physician or a neurologist for proper assessment. If his disorder can be treated (Parkinson's disease, for example) then his swallowing may improve. Otherwise other feeding options will have to be considered (nasogastric tube feeding or gastrostomy).

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis,
