Suggest Treatment For Chills And Body Pain While On Tylenol And Codeine

My 31 yo son in law had a very strange set of symptoms over the last 2 weeks. If you are up for a challenge, this one is tough. I am an RN,PHD and am having trouble with properly understanding what is going on with him. I month ago he went to WI in a cabin with his HS students on a school retreat, he was only in the cabin one night. 2wks later he developed high fever: 103 for a few days, no other symptoms. It abated and then returned 3 days later, this time with a vengeance. 103-104, chills, body aches , no respiratory issues, headache only on the very top of his head for 3-4 days. He went to a clinic in Chicago where he was seen by an internal medicine MD. A flu test was given & it was positive. He came home w Tamiflu. The next day he developed a rash on the underside of both buttocks. No bite marks....we started to think about Lyme. The fever did not abate much over the next 2 days, so it seemed Tamiflu wasn t effective. He went back to the clinic & they gave him Tylenol w Codeine. The following day Thur fever subsided. It CAme back a day later but only 100 this time. He went back to the clinic to show them the rash under his buttock. At this time they prescribed doxycycline and decided to treat it as Lyme, just in case. The Lyme test they gave him a few days earlier was negative. This 100 degree feveri went away after a day. He could finally sleep through the night. Then he broke out ina rash ...it started with just 3 erythemic rash areas about 2 inches long, and oval shaped, no bite mark visible., on his upper arms, and thigh in the morning, but by nighttime, there are t least 10-12 of these all over his body. They have an appointment to return to the clinic on Thursday of this week, but are considering seeing an infection control physician or a rheumatologist..not sure where to go. Do you think this is Lyme disease? He hasn t been around anyone who is sick or has been sick at work or home. He is anxious about his position being eliminated for next year at the school. I thought the rash could be hives as he broke out on his last day of work, or it could be a reaction to the antibiotic, although he only had one dose before he broke out. I know this is complicated, but we are pretty confused at what is happening. If you can be of help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

As per your clinical history is concerned it is due to infection and your Doctor has suggested right medication so continue with it for 3 weeks [21] days and in an early-stage test, the report is always [-ve].

Do follow lifestyle modifications like this for prevention -
1) Try to wear long pants and long sleeves. When walking in wooded or grassy areas, wear shoes, long pants tucked into your socks, a long-sleeved shirt, a hat, and gloves. Try to stick to trails and avoid walking through low bushes and long grass.
2) Use insect repellents. Apply an insect repellent with a 20 per cent or higher concentration of DEET to your skin. Apply products with Permethrin to clothing or buy pretreated clothing.
3) Do your best to tick-proof your yard. Clear brush and leaves where ticks live. Check yourself, your children and your pets for ticks. Be especially vigilant after spending time in wooded or grassy areas. It's helpful to shower as soon as you come indoors.
4) Try to remove a tick as soon as possible with tweezers. Gently grasp the tick near its head or mouth. Don't squeeze or crush the tick, but pull carefully and steadily. Once you've removed the entire tick, dispose of it and apply antiseptic to the bite area.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo,
