Suggest Treatment For Chest Congestion And Throat Irritation Due To Allergy

Need consultation on bronchial illness or allergen that I am trying to get the bottom of and the sickness may have been complicated due to extreme weather changes, extreme exercise, and travel.

Symptoms - Irritation of throat and maybe chest. Then congestion with headache. Stress makes the chest congestion soreness worse.

Allergist and Immunologist 's  Response
Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make suggestions for you as follows:

1. I usually suggest my such patients spirometry with post-bronchodilator reversibility testing which helps to measure lung capacity as well as to know the type of lung/airway disorder you may have.

2. For diagnosis of allergies, I would suggest you allergy testing for common air-borne allergens such as house dust mites, molds, pollens, insect proteins, animal dander (if you have pet). This will help you identify the substances causing allergies as well as to know the measures to reduce their exposure.

3. Based on allergy testing, an Allergist-Immunologist may prescribe you allergen specific immunotherapy which works on immune system to gradually improve allergy symptoms over a long duration.

4. For symptom control, I usually prescribe my such patients salbutamol or levosalbutamol inhaler to be used on as-and-when-needed basis. However, spirometry will help to decide appropriate type of inhaler better.

5. If you have nose symptoms also, I would add montelukast + levocetirizine to above treatment.

6. In general, please avoid exposure to dusts, smokes, air pollution and cold air as much as possible.

7. Regular physical exercise including breathing exercises and a healthy diet rich in vitamins & minerals will also help you in a long run by improving your lung capacity as well as immunity respectively.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards.
