Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. In general, a painful lump or swelling that appears suddenly over a day or two is usually caused by an injury or infection. It's likely to be an infection if the skin around the lump is red and warm. So you must consult your doctor who will do your physical examination and act accordingly. He will check whether swelling is adherent to bone, muscle or skin. He may advise you some investigations including some blood tests and if lump is adherent to bone or muscle he may advise you MRI scan to know the extent of lump. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
