Suggest Treatment For Blister On Tympanic Membrane And Wax Discharge

I have what appears to be a blister on my eardrum (tympanic membrane). What could cause this? The result has been a very full feeling in my ear over the last 10 days and a great deal of white waxy discharge. I have seen urgent care and my primary care physician and I have a follow up with ENT next week.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

All the symptoms you are referring seem to be related to eardrum infection (otitis media). However, we should rule out possible tear of tympanic membrane. That's why it is important to see ENT specialist to determine if this blister is a tear or just infection/inflammation. Meanwhile, avoid water from entering inside your ears. Clean the white wax from external part of the ear (do not put any ear bud inside to avoid worsening of the symptoms). Continue medications (if any) as prescribed by your family doctor until you see ENT specialist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
