Suggest Treatment For Bleeding After Bowel Movement

I have bright red blood when I wipe after a bowel movement. I also have irregular stools ranging from very soft and liquid like to very big dark colored that sink sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. I have bloating gas every day. I suffer from pretty bad acid reflex. I have tried everything from Pepcid to Prilocec. The Prilocec worked for the first 14 days but then as soon as those days were done the reflex came right back. I am currently taking 3 Pepcid a day plus about 5 to 7 Tums and it still doesn't completely work but keeps it somewhat at bay. Now the history of things I probably shouldn't do but hey, it happened. I drink about 3 glasses of red wine on average every other day (more on the weekend). I smoke about 3 days a week and have had anal sex on average about once a month for about 5 years. Yes I am probably a little overweight but I also try to incorporate fiber and healthy eating into my diet and go to the gym about 3 days a week. I am only 34 but my fear is my grandmother had colon cancer and when I was younger, I was even harder on my body. My concern is all of this possibly related pointing to a BIG issue? Or does this sound like a bunch of unrelated symptoms due to not being kind to my body?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Bright red blood on wiping after passing stool is most probably due to chronic fissure in ano or hemorrhoids and your anal intercourse practice too can be the reason for such a problem.

Acid reflux is usually a lifestyle disease meaning the stress, anxiety, irregular food habits and keeping away from natural course of life can cause such symptoms inspite of taking Prilosec and Tums.

This indicates a loose lower esophageal sphincter which needs a proper diagnosis, and medical or surgical management as per the findings.

Red wine and smoking all add to the symptoms that you have. Hence, I would advise you the following in such a situation:

-Colonoscopy as you are 34 and your grand parent had bowel cancer.

-Upper GI Endoscopy and Barium contrast studies may help further.

-CT scan of the abdomen, tests of stool and blood may help a lot in difficult to diagnose cases.

Please get these tests done to get a proper diagnosis and an appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
