Suggest Treatment For Bipolar Disorder

my father aged 65 yrs is suffering from bipolar disorder (mdp) for last 5 yrs . he was on antidepressant and mood stabilizers for 4 yrs and gave up all medication for one yr as it was not helping him very significantly. is there any cure. his cycle is almost monthly alternating between depression and manic states.

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern. I am afraid there isn't a cure for bipolar disorder, it is a chronic condition. However it can be controlled through medication greatly helping to conduct a normal life. The mainstay of therapy is indeed mood stabilizers and antidepressants. The fact that previous therapy was not enough doesn't mean it should be interrupted. You should discuss with his psychiatrist other alternatives, there are different types of mood stabilizers and antidepressants, switching to another alternative may be more effective than the previously used ones.
