I have bipolar and I have a problem, mostly in the winter if I itch I scratch and end up with bad soars . I pick at them when they start healing. I do it in real anxiety moments. I haven t done it in quite a while. But I have a couple really bad scars one on my leg and two on my left arm the two on my upper arm arm starting to go away and the one on my leg starts to heal but when they do it gets these numbs on them that almost burst or just start itching

Hello thanks for asking from HCM

I can understand your concern. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder and it cause episodes of mania and depression. The symptoms like compulsive scratching of skin and then ending up in sores especially in anxiety provoking events are related more to anxiety and not to mood symptoms.

For control of these issues medicines like Fluoxetine can be tried. Other SSRIs can cause manic switch so should be avoided but Fluoxetine is relatively safe. The drug will help to reduce the compulsive behaviour and you will feel better. For mood symptoms mood stabilisers like Sodium Valproate, Lithium Carbonate, Carbamazepine etc are used. Please consult your doctor for detailed evaluation.

Thanks, Take care
