Suggest Treatment For Appendicitis

Hello, my dear friend of 36 years had emergency surgery on thursday night for appendicitis he is 57 and about 2 yrs ago he had bypass surgery. he also as we just found out has cirrhosis. He is still on a vent and has been doing poorly. They tried to reduce the vent but he was breathing heavy so he had to go back on it. And they are keeping him asleep. I am trying to find out info for his sons. they lost their mother last year and not their dad is a very sick man. he is in a very small hospital and the boys want to move him to a bigger and better hospital. would that be a wise decision? And with all the odds against him I am wondering just what his chances are of survival

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
It is unfortunate that your friend has landed up in complications.
Appendicitis is an infection and hopefully he should recover well with operation and antibiotics cover.
But his prognosis seems to be bad because he is already on ventilator with weak heart and liver. Need for ventilator support says that he is unable to breathe on his own.
His chances of survival depends purely on when he will be out of ventilator. This depends on when his infection would subside and he becomes hemodynamically stable.
Until then, it could be stated that his chances of survival is grim. Hence, need to wait and watch everyday for the signs of improvement.
Hope for the best.
