Hi, my mum has worn compression stocking all her life having suffered from varacus veins and ulcers. She is 89 and due to problems removing the stockings has left them off for the last 2 weeks. She now has a pain in her ankle area which has turned white. Any ideas?
Hi, Looking at the history and the treatment, I think she is suffering from pedal edema, also involving the ankle. Due to increased permeability of veins in varicose veins, edema is common. As she has not worn compression stockings for 2 weeks, it has given rise to edema. Due to skin stretching secondary to edema, there may be pain along with the skin appearing white. Applying of compression bandages and limb elevation in supine position should reduce the pain and edema. It should return to normal within a week. NSAID painkillers may be taken for pain. Any further query, happy to help again.
