Suggest Treatment For An Open Wound After Surgery For Leg Injury

Chain saw injury to lower leg in August. Had surgery in September to reconnect a tendon, 4 months later the wound is still oozing and sutures are spitting out. This could be an allergic reaction. Should I have the surgery again to change the sutures? The wounds are beginning to heal now after a few sutures were pulled out, but I fear that the remaining sutures will find their way out in the future and my tendon will disconnect. Talking with my doctor and she doesn t give me definitive answers. I could let it heal and see what happens or can go through the long painful process of surgery again to replace the sutures. I am a Karate instructor and competitor and want to get back in the game. Thank you for your help.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is a wound infection. Consult a general surgeon and get the remaining sutured to be removed. If the sutures left in situ, it will act as a foreign body and delay wound healing.

All debris must be removed, You can apply topical antibiotics like mupirocin for faster healing. If there is infection, oral antibiotics have to be started.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
