Suggest Treatment For Alcohol Addiction

I am a 33 yr old woman who has been drinking HEAVILY for 10 yr I have a fear of Drs. I found a bottle of xanax that I was prescribed years ago for axiety. I want more than anything to stop drinking for good but I'm up to 6 pils a day with next to no relief..also I have no insurance.So...What do I do? I live with someone else who now pays the bills and I cant keep much food down. I continue to lose weight and my fear is to die of the DTs.

Dear User,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.
I have understood your problem and you seem to be in great distress. If I have to understand your problem, you are having alcohol dependence and you are taking xanax (Alprazolam) to get relief from withdrawal symptoms of alcohol when you are not taking alcohol. In my opinion Alprazolam is not a good detoxifying agent as it works for a short time. Best option is the longer acting medication i.e. either Diazepam or Chlordiazepoxide (doses equivalent to dose of Alprazolam) and gradually tapering off over two-three weeks. Your liver functions should not be significantly deranged to use these medications. As regards you fear of DT, it is unlikely if you gradually reduce alcohol/medications rather than abruptly stopping the same. Stay hopeful and follow the regimen. There will be initial difficulty due to withdrawal symptoms but hopefully you will be able to get rid of Alcohol and all the meds.
