Suggest Treatment For Acute Diarrhea

My 7 1/2 year old daughter has had diarrhea and now blood and pus in her stools for the past 3 days. Doctor has prescribed Oflamac Forte 8ml twice a day for 5 days. Should I go ahead? She is starting to feel comity. Is it OK to change to another antibiotic midway?

Hi
Welcome to health care magic,

So,your daughter is suffering from acute diarrhea with blood and pus in stools since 3 days. Here is my observation and comments.

In mostly small children, diarrhea usually due to viral infection (rotavirus or adenovirus) or some times bacterial infection or parasitic etc.

Since she is also having blood and pus in stool which is indicating more towards bacterial or parasitic infestations.

She it would be better to undergo routine blood counts, blood electrolytes, urea, creatinine and stool (R/ M and ova, cyst) examinations if you have not done it earlier.(especially before starting antibiotics)

Yes,she should be given antibiotics (but after lab tests or giving samples) with anaerobic bacteria coverage (like quinolones with ornidazole) with antispasmodics , water and electrolyte replacements, with probiotics like lactobaccillus, racecadotril etc.

Give her plenty of water and fruit juices with WHO-ORS formula to prevent dehydration and electrolyte balance.

Oflamac forte antibiotic is good but she should also be given anaerobic coverage (metronidazole or ornidazole) for which you will need to see her doctor again.Otherwise there is no need to change antibiotic in midway.

You must consult pediatrician for further advise and follow-up.

Hope detailed information will help.
