Suggest Treatment For Abscess On The Back Of The Neck

I had a abscess for on the back of my neck due to a spider bite I was told. Local emergency care facility gave me a mild antibiotic and sent me home. Next day got the size a my fist and continued to swell, Went to dermatologist he prescribed higher dose of antibiotics and steroids for the swelling. 2 days later more pain of the abscess was still swilling and a lot more pain. He suggested that I should go to the hospital because this was out of his wheel house to treat in his office. Went into the emergency room and was admitted and scheduled for surgery the same day. Blood test reviled a blood sugar level around 325. I was told this was because of the steroids prescribed. I was at the hospital for 5 days for recovery and to get my blood sugar down. I had in home wound care for 6 weeks. Blood sugar and recover went fine. Insurance is telling me this was not an emergency procedure even though I think it was. Just wanted to know if the blood sugar of 325 was dangerous or not?

Hi,

The blood sugar of 325 is obviously high and has to be controlled, otherwise may be dangerous.

Medications, such as antibiotics are given to treat the infection. In most of the cases, patient may need to be hospitalized and intravenous antibiotics are given. Painkillers are also prescribed to relieve pain from the abscess.

If the abscess does not get resolved with antibiotics, then drainage of the abscess needs to be done. This is accomplished with a needle and the patient may need to be hospitalized for this procedure. The pus sample collected from the drainage is sent to a laboratory for culture and after the organism, which is causing the infection is determined, a specific antibiotic is prescribed accordingly.

Treatment of neck abscess by drainage:

Drainage of superficial neck abscess:
Draining of a superficial neck abscess is quite a simple procedure and is done under general anesthesia. A local anesthetic is also injected into the affected region. The lump, which is caused by the abscess, is then felt by the doctor to assess the areas, which has the most pus. The doctor then makes an incision in that region to drain the pus and a drain is then placed through the skin to prevent the pus from accumulating again. The culture of the pus done to determine the type of bacteria or organism which is causing the infection and according to the results of the culture, a specific antibiotic is prescribed to treat the infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
