Suggest Treatment For Abdominal Pain When Diagnosed With An Umbilical Hernia

Hi, I have an umbilical hernia. It’s been around for 10 years. I recently went to go see a specialist about it and he suggested I lose 50lbs. He also suggested a keto diet to lose the weight. Instead, I went on a plant based vegan diet and have lost 25lbs so far. I experience lots of pain everyday, but I just push the hernia back in. Sometimes it goes away, sometimes it doesn’t. When I pass a bowel movement it feels better and when I go to sleep and wake up in the morning it feels better. The doctor told me that as I lose weight, the fat and fluid surrounding it that’s causing the pain, will subside, and maybe to the point that I won’t even know it’s there anymore. I have yet to see that; if anything, the pain is getting worse, but not only in my belly button, but in the abdominal region directly beside it. Any thoughts as to what this could be? Is it my diet?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

There are various reasons for abdomen pain with an umbilical hernia as :
- intestine loops pooling inside the hernia sac
- intestine motility-related issue
- digestive enzymes insufficiency
- dietary factors
- obesity
- others.

Primary relief with proton pump inhibitor, antispasmodic medications. Discuss the need for surgery with your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
