Suggest Treatment For GERD

I have brought up food after eating for many years but seems to be more prevalent now. Whole pieces of undigested food often come up (pepper, onions, bread) Have no other symptoms such as heartburn or pain. Could this be GERD and if so what is the best treatment, I was very overweight for many years but lost significant weight. Also take atenolol and aspirin for HBP if this might be a factor.

Hello dear,

Considering the fact that you have a high blood pressure, it can be a risk factor for the symptoms mentioned in your post.
Kindly take your medicines as advised and check your blood pressure regularly.
Regurgitation of food and Acid reflux is caused due to excess acid formation in stomach & relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.

Medical management of acid reflux consists of intake of Proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole, Omeprazole, etc. which prevent acid formation in stomach.

Additional management involves:
1. Intake of Domperidone preparations which strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux.
2. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
3. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.

If symptoms still persist, it will be better to consult your treating Doctor/ Gastroenterologist.
Investigation like Ultrasound scan of abdomen & Upper GI endoscopy will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Wish you a good health.
Take care.
