Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is 5 years old and has Cystic Fibrosis. 6 months ago his glucose levels came back at 156 mg/dL, I asked his pulmonary nurse practitioner about this and she said we would re-check in 6 months. Yesterday he had his annul labwork done and his glucose levels came back at 187 mg/dL. I emailed her and got this reply from a random nurse:
We become a bit more concerned if glucoses are consistently >200 or if patient is having difficulty maintaining healthy weights. We also will perform a more detailed assessment of glucose control at 10yrs of age and then annually based on increased risk of CF related diabetes later in childhood. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have further questions.
To me, this seems like a very generic reply...almost automated. In a normal overall healthy person, I would thinnk 187 would be considered high and possibly alarming. Am I wrong here or should I question this more with a second opinion. Im truly concerned over his numbers.
hi and thnx for your query Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. 50% of CF patients develop diabetes by the age of 30 years. Digestive enzyme replacement therapy (such as with Creon or Pancreaze), to help the intestines absorb nutrients from food. No one is a better example of improvements in cystic fibrosis (CF) treatment than Gunnar Esiason. The 21-year-old Boston College senior is living proof that while this genetic disease may still be incurable.
i thnk blood sugar level is a concern in your kids case and you sud take a second opinion about it.
