Suggest Treatment For Bell's Palsy And Ear Infection

I have been diagnosed with Bells Palsy. I believe this all began in October when my left ear didn t feel right. I went to a GP and sure enough had an ear infection. Took the antibiotics and thought I would get relief, but it still didn t feel 100% normal. Had really poor balance, dizziness and a GP put me on antibiotics again for fluid in the ear. 2 weeks go by and I am still having pain in the ear and basically feeling bad. More antibiotic and steroids were given. 2 weeks went by and I had my first Bells Palsy episode. Went to the doctor that day and was given another round of antibiotics. Another week passed and more spasms about one per day and nothing significant to leave my face drooping. Went to see a specialist for ears, nose and throat and have been given 2 rounds of antibiotics and steroids. I am showing slight improvement and can go a day or two without having a spasm. I was told this type of things takes time to heal and there is nothing wrong with my ear. (I now have significant hearing loss.) Should I be concerned? Am I getting the right treatment?

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Science is not yet able to pinpoint the exact cause of Bell's Palsy. However, it is more commonly associated with herpes infection or inflammation of the facial area, in your case the ear infection.

The steroid and antibiotics treatment you are getting is also the correct treatment to treat Bell's Palsy as it does show improvement in response to steroids. Your doctor is right that the disorder takes some time to heal so you might have to wait for a few months to have complete recovery.

Some facial exercises such as contracting and relaxing facial muscles in addition to forehead, lips and cheeks with oil or cream can help in faster improvement in muscle tone.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic. I wish you faster and complete recovery soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
