Suggest Treatment For Alzheimer S

My husband is in late stages of Alzheimers and is in a memory care unit. The nurse called this morning to say he is having continuous arm jerking and a slight swelling around his mouth. He is on an antibiotic for a UTI and she thinks it could be a reaction to the med. However, it could also be a stroke. I don t want to prolong his life, so I asked her to wait before sending him to the hospital. Guess I am worried about what I don t know about a stroke being debiltating. Not sure what to ask... Thanks, Patricia

Hello Patricia!

My name is Dr. Aida and I am glad to attend you on Healthcaremagic!

As far as I can understand by your husband symptoms, he may be having seizures or a stroke. Seizures could be related to his therapy adverse effects.
Anyway, I agree with you on the fact that it is necessary bringing him to the hospital for a physical exam, an EEG and a brain CT scan, followed by some blood lab tests (complete blood count, blood electrolytes, kidney and liver function tests, fasting glucose).
In case of a stroke, besides blood thinners and physiotherapy, there is not too much to be done. In case of seizures, an antiepileptic drug would help improve his situation.
You should discuss with his doctor on the above issues.
Hope you will find this information helpful!
Best wishes!
