Suggest Tests In A Person With Symptoms Of Hypothyroidism

Hi I am a 44 year old female who for over a year have been having symptoms of Hypothyroidism. I had surgery a month on my foot. During surgery doctor discovered tissues were inflamed. He sent me to be tested for Rheumatoid Arthritis. I requested that he do a test for Thyroid because I have been having symptoms of Hypothyroidism for over a year. Rheum factor was 221 and ANA was none. My tsh level was 6.92. Just trying to find out if the two (RA and Hypothyroidism) can be connected.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi dear,

Based on the results that you have indicated above, it shows that you have both Hypothyroidism and Rheumatoid arthritis.

Answering to your question, if both diseases can be connected then the answer to that is, yes it's possible.

According to some researches if someone develops one autoimmune disease it's then highly likely that they might develop another autoimmune disease. Hypothyroidism though could be caused by other reasons but the most common cause is autoimmune disorder known as Hashimotos thyronditis and rheumatoid arthritis is also an autoimmune disease.

Wish you all the best
