Suggest Remedy For Water Retention Due To Synthroid

I think my synthroid is causing massive water retention, my indocrine says I am crazy but my feet swell up like crazy whenever I take it. I am ready blogs where people are having the same issues. I m not crazy and I am not sure what to do. I honestly have to take my shoes off during the day because my feet swell, I am a healthy person otherwise and never had this issue until I started taking synthroid.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If you have experiencing swelling of the lower limbs you may need to make sure that there are no other causes .

The other causes of this swelling include: venous disease, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease.
History , physical examination and blood tests can check for these conditions.

Elevation of your legs and reducing salt intake may help.

I hope this helps

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis's  Response
Hello,

although thyroxine (the active ingredient of synthroid) cannot cause your symptoms, every pill contains more ingredients than the active one. Sometimes they may cause problems to selected patients. For example synthroid may cause diarrhea even if the thyroid is under perfect control because of its lactose content.

Thus, I cannot 100% exclude the possibility that some ingredient causes this problem to you but I have to tell you that is highly unlikely and you should exclude other common causes before attributing it to synthroid.

First of all you should visit your primary care physician for assessment of your edema and of course for investigation. If all other potential causes are excluded then you can try stopping it for a few days to see what happens. If the edema disappears and only reappears after starting it again, then you would have got enough proof of its side effects and your doctor should report it.

Kind Regards!
