Suggest Remedy For Tenderness Around Thyroid Gland
My endocrinologist did some blood work on me last August for thyroid. I did not find out until 8 months later that I have Hashimotos Desease. I told him I was having difficulty swallowing and had tenderness in the neck area around the thyroid and that sometimes it spasms. He had me have an ultra sound which shows I have small nodules. He wants me to wait before having a biopsy. I am having palpitations quite frequently now, which I haven t had in the past. I am concerned and not sure if I should push for the biopsy. I was on Victosa for diabetes and it caused me to have pancreatitis. I also know that one of the warnings on Victosa was thyroid cancer. HOw concerned should I be over this. I don t see him again until mid July.
Hi, Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
The answers to your questions are:
1.Once you have thyroid nodules, the next investigation should be FNAC thyroid. You have to proceed with the needle biopsy to decide if it need to be operated or not.
2. The pain and discomfort in neck is due to thyroiditis - the inflammation of thyroid seen in hashimoto's hypothyroidism It will settle in few months time.
3. One of the side effects of victoza is pancreatitis. But medullary cancer of thyroid is reported only in animal studies (rats), not in humans. Still there is a possible risk.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help With warm regards, Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM) Consultant Endocrinologist.
