Suggest Remedy For Sunburn With Swollen Forehead, Eyes

My daughter has a very bad sunburn. She woke up this morning and her forehead was swollen. the swelling continued and after a day and a half, her eyes continue to swell - so bad that she can barely open them. I have been giving her ibuprofen and tylenol and she had one dose of benadryl. She is also applying ice cold compresses regularly. can I do anything else and how long will the swelling continue?

thanks for asking here in this forum..
the treatment you are giving is good..but i will add that you should wash the area frequently..apply antibiotic plus steroid ointment...this will reduce swelling..don't apply ice packs directly..wrap in some gauze or cloth.. she will be fine soon..thanks

Dermatologist Dr. Dr. Kakkar's  Response
Hello. Thanks for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Acute sunburn can be very discomforting. There is burning sensation, discomfort, redness and swelling as part of the inflammatory response to a sunburn. Swelling is due to the leakage of fluids from blood vessels into the tissues.
Since the skin around the eyes is lax and can accommodate, therefore the fluid that had leaked as part of sunburn has trickled down to the area around the eyes due to gravity.
If I was the treating doctor I would have started her on a short course of an oral steroids for a week or so. Steroids are antiinflammatory and are rapidly effective in case of a sunburn.
Topically she may use a moderately potent topical steroid e.g fluticasone propionate 0.05% cream at the affected area.
Topical as well as oral steroids are prescription products, therefore, I would suggest that you talk to your doctor for the needful.
She may continue with symptomatic treatment with analgesics like ibuprofen.

Regards
