Doctor, I am 66 year old male generally in good health with 6 monthly doctor check up. I have lost 20 kgs over last 2 years by controlling my eating and exercising on a daily basics, current weight 83 kgs and height of 1780mm. I only sleep for 2 to 3 hours and then awake for 30 mins and would repeat 2 to 3 times a night. During the day I am always falling asleep and feeling very tired.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM

I can understand your concern. You are a healthy 66 years old male with average height and you have recently lost weight by exercise and by controlling diet. Now you have developed complaints of poor sleep. You sleep of 2-3 hours and it is followed by multiple awakening in night. It is also associated with day time drowsiness and tiredness. As the complaints are causing impairment in day time functioning so I would advise you to consult a sleep specialist or psychiatrist for treatment.

Improving sleep hygiene with measures like avoiding tea/coffee in evening, avoiding day time naps, using bed only for sleeping and not using bed for reading or watching TV. Light exercise in evening will also help.

If improving sleep hygiene doesn't in improvement then medicines like benzodiazepines, Zdrugs etc can help. Clonazepam, Zolpidem etc are commonly used. These medicines carry abuse potential so should be used for short term only and should be used with proper prescription only. Other medicines like Melatonin, Ramelteon etc can also be used for good sleep. Visit a doctor for prescription.

Thanks, hope this helps you.
