Hi ive acquire a second degree road rash 2 weeks ago. I kept it moist all the time and I always scrub the exudates off as recommended by some people online. Now it is starting to show red bumps and it is very itchy. Some parts are also cracked. Is this normal or am I managing the wound wrong?

Hello,

You have developed rash two weeks ago. Presently the area affected has become itchy and red bumps have started coming. You are suggested to take care of your hygiene, take bath regularly, be gentle with your wound (area affected with rashes and bumps). Keep it clean and protected from getting infected. You can apply a thin layer of ointment/cream hydrocortisone on the affected area. It will relieve itching. Cold compression and icing will also help but be gentle.

Take non sedating antihistamine to reduce symptoms due to allergy. Avoid any factor that triggers your symptoms like dust, pollen, animal dander, certain food, side effects of certain medicines, insect bite, poison ivy, etc. You are suggested to stop sharing your toiletries. Wash your clothes in hot water frequently. Get clinically examined by a dermatologist, if it is scabies, applying Ointment Ascabiol on the affected area, leaving it for 30 minutes then taking shower will reduce symptoms. In case of contact dermatitis your treating doctor may give you a course of corticosteroids.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
