Suggest Remedy For Prolonged Recurring Cough And Runny Nose In A Toddler

My son of 1.8 years (from Pretoria in South Africa) has suffered from a cough for 6 months now. Is sounds wet one minute then dry the next. Also it is accommanied by runny nose (clear then green then clear again). I have had him on antibiotics, homeopath meds, clearing airway meds, taking him off diary, elevated his bed and pillow and rubbed Vicks on his chest and feet. Had him on various types of cough syrup etc. Honey at night. Steam him, humidity his room. Vacuum and change sheets weekly etc. Nothing seems to take it away. Taken him to ENT and doc says ears, nose and tonsils look good and chest sounds clear. His chest sounds phlegmy to me when he breathes at times though. He only coughs when he is active and at night when he sleeps. Wakes same times every night coughing. Various doctors say his too young for allergy tests. Please help. We loosing sleep and I am suffering from anxiety because I can t seem to solve this. Thanks.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query prolonged recurring cough and runny nose in a toddler which is very recurrent seems to be due to streptococcal infection and weather change due to which there is upper respiratory tract infection of toddler. I would suggest you to visit Pediatrician once and get it examined. You should get X-ray chest done along with blood and sputum tests of child. Till then you should give child steam inhalation and apply mist humidifiers in room. Your child's symptoms will resolve in 5-7 days. If symptoms keeps on persisting start proper medication. You should give DayQuil and advil cold to your child. Give child plenty of fluids to rehydrate.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Get Well Soon.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
