Suggest Remedy For Overdose Of Medicine
Hello,my wife has taken an overdose of her medication (carbamazepine). She is on a prescribed dose of 200mg (1 tablet) per day. This evening (currently 8:30pm here in Rio de Janeiro), to discover she had ingested 12 tablets (2400mg). She is presenting with symptoms of extremely slurred speech and poor motor function control.She has already vomited a few times. Initially I got her to drink a couple of glasses of water and put her finger down her throat in an attempt to empty her stomach as much as possible. She is currently sleeping. Her breathing is normal and her pulse is 92. The hospital system here in Rio is the pits and taking her there would only result in her being put on a stretcher in an overcrowded ward. I guess what I would really like to know is there anything else I should or could be doing.

Carbamazepine is commonly prescribed for seizures, mood disorders and also for neuralgic pain. Normal dosage is 15 to 25 mg/Kg. Over-dosage requires hospital admission. Since there is need for isotonic fluid therapy, activated charcoal administration and hemodialysis, hospital admission is compulsory. Carbamazepine is mainly protein bound and have main effects on the heart and brain.
It depress the central nervous system activity and affects the heart. Common symptoms in toxicity are unconsciousness, respiratory depression, arrhythmia, etc. Death may be due to respiratory depression. Mortality is up to 13 percent in over-dosage particularly when the serum levels of more than 40 microgram per milliliter. Hemodialysis is compulsory to remove the drug.
