Suggest Remedy For Keratoacanthoma

I had a skin tag on my lower right eyelid, which I rubbed with a towel after my shower. It bled a little, but 2 weeks later it has become big, and after I looked on the Internet, I would say it is a Keratoacanthoma. I am in the US on holiday, and will be back home in 2 weeks. Is it worth getting it checked out here, or should I wait to get back? I'm a 34 year old woman.
Many thanks

Hello,

Thank you for your question here on HealthCareMagic.

I've read your question and went through your concerns and from my experience keratoacanthoma can resolve by itself and go away in a few moths without any treatment. On the other hand please note that you do not know if you have kerathoacanthoma for sure it's just a personal assumption and my advice is based on your personal assumption.

This skin lesion that resembles a little volcano can not be differentiated clearly from more serious skin problems such as squamous cell carcinoma and in most cases the treatment is a surgical one.

If I were your treating doctor I would first take a look at the lesion using my dermatoscope then if it has kerathoacanthoma clues I would decide to take it out and send it to the pathology lab for more information just to be safe.

To answer your question about having it checked right now or in two weeks time, the answer is that it's not a life threatening emergency and if it really is what you assume it is (kerathoacanthoma) it can wait 2 more weeks. I strongly recommend though seeing a dermatologist as soon as you get back home.

I repeat even pathology exams (microscope analysis of the excised piece) are having hard time distinguishing kerathoacanthoma from squamous cell carcinoma (a form of skin cancer) and this is why you should get your eyelid seen by a dermatologist.

Do not hesitate to ask if you have more questions.

Best Regards,
