My Father (M, 76, No personal history of illness, active lifestyle - 5km walk/daily, first hospitalization in life), and has the following symptoms: Patient has complained of rheumatism like pain in shoulder for past 2 decades. 48 hours ago woke up to intense pain in shoulder. Was taken to hospital with pain scale of 8/10. ER Doctor went to inject the shoulder with cortisone however the syringe filled with blood. Doctor had to switch to a different syringe in order to drain the blood from the shoulder socket (250ml). Father felt immediate relief. was given some additional analgesics and sent home. within 24 hours had to return to the hospital as the shoulder socked had once again filled with blood. pain scale 9/10. Shoulder was drained and father given a series of pain killers which did not alleviate pain. Ended up being admitted to orthopedics and was administered 6mg of morphine, however will only see a specialist tomorrow morning - 72hours after initial visit to ER.With morphine his is pain scale to 4/10. Arm has been immobilized in sling and patient is not permitted to use the arm for any function whatsoever. at the moment of both ER Admissions his blood pressure was 190/90. But is now beginning to return to normal. Considering that my father has not suffered a recent trauma to the shoulder or any other area of his body, what could be the cause, and what could be the possible treatment. I ask this because I am anxious to know what my father s condition may be... I live a 28 hour flight from him.
