Suggest Remedy For Injury In Palm On A Rusty Nail

Hi, My daughter cut the palm of her hand on a rusty nail yesterday. I cleaned it with Dettol and steri stripped it. Today I have cleaned it twice and put an iodine impregnated gauze on it. She is 15 and up to date with her immunisations. It is red and very sore and I plan to dress it twice a day with gauze after cleaning it with saline. Should I have it seen by a doctor? Thank you.

Ofcourse it would be the better decision to have a physicians consultation as the exact comment regarding the lesion can not be give unless visual impression is made.
As per your narration she is upto date for her immunisation so if she had received the inj Tetanus toxoid in recent months no need of repeating the same. Otherwise it should be taken earliest.
Further more if the cut is singnificant enough it may need an oral antibiotic coverage along with the daily cleaning & dressing of the wound.
So it will be more prefearble if you take physicians opinian who can guid you on all aspects properly.

Radiologist Dr. Vivek Chail's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

It is better to see a doctor. This is to check if there is any infection developing in the injury. This may be treated by a short course of antibiotics. What happens is along with the rusty nail a lot of dirt might have entered the wound. If she has taken tetanus shots earlier then no need to take it again. Wound dressing may be taken care as mentioned by you.
