Suggest Remedy For Extreme Cough Causing Painful Chest And Shortness Of Breath

Hi Doc, I started feeling a cold coming on last Sunday. Very heavy chest. Dry cough. Continued to get worse over the next few days. Took nyquil and mucinex. Stopped mucinex after 1 day as it really hurt my stomach. Pressure on chest got worse. Cough got worse, now a hacking cough but nothing is coming up. Sweating a lot too. Went to walk in clinic. Diagnosed as bronchitis. They gave me Z-pack which I am on day 3. Not feeling much better and cough is getting painful. I am also getting short of breath. Am I on the right course of treatment? Feel like the Zpack should be working by now? Thanks for your help.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have extreme cough which is causing painful chest and shortness of breath is due to lung infection leading to bronchitis. Z pack as given to you by doctor is the right course of medication. Apart from this is would suggest you to do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. Avoid taking hot, spicy and fried food. Avoid cold carbonated beverages an don't smoke and alcohol. Take expectorants. Steam inhalation is very effective for you. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist without any delay . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or virus culture test. You should get an x ray of the chest and Immunoglobulin G levels checked for further treatment. Take decongestant nasal sprays containing mucinex for instant relief. Apply humidifiers in room.
